The faun from Pan's Labyrinth

Pan’s Labyrinth (El Laberinto del fauno) is a two hour must see movie that has left me enchanted and somewhat sad. It tells the story of young Ofelia, stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer, who survives harsh reality by escaping into a fantasy world. Director Guillermo del Toro shows us how children still have the ability to dream and use magic to make their life (and end) more bearable.

I found Pan’s Labyrinth not only great storytelling, but also its cinematography and art-direction impressed me very much. Examples are the richness of the brown-green color palette used throughout the movie and the many shots that are wonderfully lighted. The soothing dark Spanish voice of the faun and apt yet subtle special effects make Pan’s Labyrinth a very captivating movie.

The cast of Pan’s Labyrinth, all Spanish actors and actresses, are unknown to the general public. The young actress Ivana Baquero did a great job portraying a modern brave Alice in Wonderland who faces many dark twists.

Promise me you are going to see this movie!
