MacBook keyboardI’ve updated my list of free recommended applications for Mac OS X 10.4+. So far I’ve found no good reason to run Windows instead of Mac OS X for all daily tasks.

  • AdiumX - free instant messaging application that can connect to AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo, and more.

  • Colloquy - an advanced IRC, SILC & ICB client.
  • FastIcns - Icons creator with an innovative and easy–to–use interface.
  • FileZilla - FTP client which I use next to Cyberduck. On MacOS X it seems pretty stable since version 3.0.3.
  • ffmpegX - User interface to easily operate Unix open-source video and audio processing tools including ffmpeg, mpeg2enc, multiplexer and mencoder. The ultimate drag&drop A/V conversion tool!
  • Growl - Growl is a notification system: it allows applications that support Growl to send you notifications, e.g. Adium and Colloquy.
  • Golly - Great simulator with libraries for Conway’s Game of Life (automaton game).
  • iStumbler - wireless discovery tool providing plugins for finding AirPort networks, Bluetooth devices and Bonjour services.
  • LiquidMac - this is a fun demo: use your sudden-motion-sensor to interact with the liquid.
  • MacTex - LaTeX distribution for Mac OS X; includes Bibdesk, Excalibur, LaTeXit and TexShop.
  • MAMP - Out-of-the-box MacOS Apache 2, MySQL 5, PHP 4&5, manage and run LAMP applications locally. Includes PhpMyAdmin, SQLiteManager and some common libraries for graphics conversions.
  • OpenFTD and SABnzbd - Use these two for all your newsgroup searches and retrieval needs.
  • SUM+GEN - Utility to calculate MD5, SHA, SHA1, RMD160 or MDC2 hashes by drag&drop.
  • WhatRoute - a freeware graphical version of the Unix traceroute command.
